SUMMARY:Winter Concert 2026
DESCRIPTION:SOGO’s winter concert shines a spotlight on Olympia Symphony Principal Cellist Holly Reeves\, a longtime friend of SOGO and an influential mentor to generations of young cellists across the region. Many of her students are past or present members of SOGO. Holly joins the Conservatory Orchestra for a movement from Grażyna Bacewicz’s Concerto No. 1 for Cello and Orchestra. The program also features the evocative Spanish themes of Bizet’s Carmen Suite No. 1\, the charming Allegro in Waltz by SOGO flutist and composer Karina Bone of Montesano\, and Balmages’ lively (UP)LIFTED. \nRounding out the concert\, the Philharmonic and Academy Orchestras and Brass Choir will impress with their vibrant interpretations of both timeless favorites and bold contemporary works.

DESCRIPTION:SOGO’s season opener promises an exciting mix of talent\, tradition\, and a few surprises. Featured guest and SOGO alumnus Henry Nordhorn returns to the stage with the Conservatory Orchestra and Brass Choir\, performing works by Gershwin and Mozart on French horn. A graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory and now a member of the Spokane Symphony\, Henry brings his artistry full circle. Audiences will also enjoy Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain\, and Danzas Cubanas\, a vibrant new piece by American composer Robert Sheldon. \nThe Philharmonic and Academy orchestras round out the program with a dynamic mix of classic and contemporary selections. And to kick off the evening—you might just find yourself part of the performance!

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 24th season of Student Orchestras of Greater Olympia (SOGO). The Fall Concert starts with the Conservatory Orchestra performing Joyride by Markowski – a new rendition of the popular Ode to Joy. But in this case\, you’ll need to hold on to your seat like it’s the best roller coaster ride ever! Music Director Cameron May continues to push the envelope with Music for a Midnight Carriage Ride by local composer Austin Schlichting. Think Halloween or the scariest movie you have ever watched! The concert wouldn’t be complete without bringing in the cannons with the ever-popular 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky. \nThe 18-member SOGO Brass Choir provides a little hoedown humor with Meeboer’s Western Fair. Conducted by Greg Allison\, the ensemble will include more traditional works for the brass.
