001 – Bass Class

Instructor: Masters

The big switch, literally, from another string instrument to playing the string bass. Students will work on basic playing techniques as applied to the bass to make an effective and efficient transition to string bass.

002 – Fiddling

Instructor: Daulton

Students will review and expand basic techniques needed to play a string instrument in the fiddling style and learning various traditional fiddle tunes.The class will be part of the culminating concert.

003 – World Drumming

Instructor: Brown

Students will explore principles of rhythm awareness through body rhythm, singing, movement, call and response drum communication and drum language. Songs from Ghana and Liberia are used to teach drumming technique and better understand the world drumming cultures. The class will be part of the culminating concert.

004 – Intermediate String Orchestra

String players with at least one year experience will improve fundamentals, technique and performance skills. The class will be part of the culminating concert.

005 – Music Theory (a must-have skill!)

Instructor: Ward

Learn to put a name to the chords, scales, and intervals you are playing.  Every music student should take this class to make their musical playing experience more meaningful.

REQUIRED for Composition on the Computer class.

Alfred’s Essentials of Music Theory (Complete) is available at local music stores or online.

006 – Steel Drumming

Instructor: Brown

Students will learn the basics of steel pan playing and performance as they prepare for a final concert. Steel drums along with other instruments used in the steel band “engine room” are provided for students’ use. The class will learn to produce a characteristic tone and play melodies using proper technique. Basic percussion skills will also be taught. Students will learn to read music symbols and charts, and rhythms characteristic of another culture while exploring Calypso music. The class will be part of the culminating concert.

007 – Composing on the Computer

Do you have a melody running through your head and would like to share it with others? This class will explore the basics of melody and harmony, so you can begin to develop your own style.

A personal laptop is required with the free Finale Notepad software installed prior to the start of class (Finale account required).

  • Prerequisites: Grades 6-8, must have taken the Music Theory class (004) or by permission.

008 – Beginning Band

Instructor: Allison

The beginning band class will give students an opportunity to get a head start on their fall school music program or to simply explore learning a band instrument. Students will be instructed on the fundamentals of their instrument. The class will be part of the culminating concert.

Tradition of Excellence Book 1 is available from a local music store or online.

  • Prerequisites: Grades 5-6, no experience required

  • Instrumentation: Flute/Clarinet/Saxophone/Trumpet/Trombone/Snare & Bells

  • Materials: Student must bring their own instrument and Tradition of Excellence Book 1

009 – Swap Band

The Swap Band is designed for musicians that are interested in exploring a different band instrument. This class is ideal for those that need to learn to double in jazz band or who have been asked by their school director to switch to another instrument. The class will be part of the culminating concert.  

Accent on Achievement Book 2 is available at local music stores or online for your specific instrument.

  • Prerequisites: Grades 7-8 or 2 years minimum playing experience on primary instrument.

  • Instrumentation: Please bring the band instrument you would like to learn.

  • Materials: Student must bring their own instrument and Accent on Achievement Book 2

Jazz band students will perform in a variety of jazz styles and cover the basics of improvisation.  The class will be part of the culminating concert.

Camp Choir

This is a half hour class that is free to any Summer Music participant who signs up for at least 1 other class. The class will explore basic vocal technique, solfege, singing in unison and harmony – all voices are welcome. The class will be part of the culminating concert.

  • Instrumentation: Voice

  • Materials: Music provided

  • Cost: FREE if student is taking at least one instrumental class; otherwise $50.
