Join SOGO’s Prelude Strings (1-2 years experience)
We invite you to join SOGO’s Prelude Strings!
Student Orchestras of Greater Olympia (SOGO) is providing an after-school program (Mondays, 5:30-6:30 PM @ Nisqually M.S.) for Three (3) six-week sessions. You can sign up for one or all three.
Session 1 – October 7, 14, 21; November 4, 18, 25*
Session 2 – January 6, 13, 27; February 3, 10, 24*
Session 3 – March 9, 16, 23; April 13, 20, 27*
The class will be taught by Rebecca Gage. Ms. Gage has over 20 years of successful teaching experience (beginning-high school) and is currently an orchestra teacher with the North Thurston School District.
Enrollment is open to any elementary or middle school string player with one or two years of experience. If your school orchestra teacher has given you this handout, they believe this would be a great experience for you.
This class will focus on making students successful in the following areas:
- Hand position
- Bow technique
- Exploration of more advanced key signatures
- Growing to understand more advanced rhythmic figures
- Sight reading
- A better understanding of the role of each instrument in the orchestra
- Preparation to succeed in a full orchestra setting
- Introduction to standard orchestral literature
- Learning to follow a conductor
- Concert and rehearsal etiquette
The classes will be held on Mondays beginning October 7 from 5:30-6:30 PM at Nisqually Middle School – 8100 Steilacoom Road SE, Lacey, WA 98503 (dates subject to change)
*There will be a half hour program (“Informance”) for parents, family, and friends after the last class of each session (November 25, February 24, April 27) in the Nisqually MS music room at 6:30 PM.

There is a registration fee collected at the first class – $50 per six-week session.
